Why conversation starters matter

The first minute sets the tone. If you open with "what do you do?" or "where are you from?", the other person clicks into autopilot and gives you the same answer they've used 200 times. Open with something different and the brain switches on, sending the chat in an unpredictable direction. Not magic: opening psychology.

Types of starters and when to use them

  1. Context-specific: "What brought you to this event?" at a conference. Shows you paid attention.
  2. Genuine curiosity: "What's exciting you this week?" Personal but not intimate. Works almost anywhere.
  3. Shared experience: "What's the last thing you learned that surprised you?" Creates vulnerability without forcing it.
  4. Preference: "Coffee, tea or yerba mate?" Sounds trivial, opens a door to habits and routine.
  5. Projection: "What are you working on that's keeping you up?" Useful with founders and creatives.

Starters to avoid

  • "What do you do?": bypass it when you can. People are tired of being identified by their job.
  • The weather: useful only if it's truly extreme. Otherwise, noise.
  • Politics or religion: in low-trust contexts, risky territory.
  • Comments on appearance: even compliments. Makes the other person feel evaluated before greeted.

The follow-up trick

A great starter is half the work. The other half is the follow-up. If they say "I'm learning to cook Thai", don't just say "cool" and pivot to yourself. Ask: "what dish came out best?", "which ingredient was hardest to find?", "who taught you?". The follow-up shows you listened and is almost always where real connection lives.

Practice: three encounters, three starters

This week use a different one in each interaction: a new coworker, your partner at dinner, someone in line. Notice which one drives the most conversation. You'll spot patterns: some people respond to abstract, others to concrete. Calibrate by them, not by you.
