How many seconds are in an hour? And how many hours are in 5400 seconds? This tool converts any duration between seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks, and also shows it in clock format (hh:mm:ss). Type a number, pick the unit, and you see every equivalent at once. It is handy for plenty of things: in video editing, to work out the length of a cut or an exported timeline; to know how long a song or podcast lasts in seconds (a 3:45 track is 225 seconds); in sport and running, to turn your 1:52:30 finish time into minutes or seconds; in the kitchen, to adjust cooking times; in programming, when you set a timeout in seconds and need to think of it in hours; and in hourly billing, to convert minutes worked into fractions of an hour. All the math runs in your browser, with no signup and nothing sent to any server.
From seconds to a clock (hh:mm:ss) and back
Turning a total of seconds into the clock format is just dividing and keeping the remainders. Divide by 3600 for the hours, the remainder by 60 for the minutes, and what is left are the seconds. So 5400 seconds is 1 hour and 30 minutes (01:30:00), and 3600 seconds is exactly 01:00:00. When the duration goes past 24 hours, we add the days in front: 90,000 seconds shows as 1d 01:00:00 (one day and one hour). For the reverse, type the time in the field below using the hh:mm:ss pattern (for example 1:30:00) or mm:ss, and we convert it to seconds and to the rest of the units.
Seconds, minutes, hours: how they relate
Every conversion starts from fixed, exact factors. A minute is 60 seconds, an hour is 60 minutes (3600 seconds), a day is 24 hours (86,400 seconds) and a week is 7 days (604,800 seconds). To convert between units you multiply or divide by the factor that separates them: from minutes to seconds you multiply by 60; from seconds to hours you divide by 3600. The tool does both directions at once, so you never have to remember each number.
Where converting durations helps
- Video and audio editing: turning a clip length from seconds into minutes, or making sense of a timeline exported in seconds.
- Music and podcasts: a 3:45 track is 225 seconds; useful for playlists, jingles and total-duration math.
- Sport and running: convert a race time (1:52:30) into minutes or seconds to compare paces.
- Programming: translate a timeout or TTL in seconds into minutes or hours to read it at a glance.
- Hourly billing: convert minutes worked into fractions of an hour (90 min = 1.5 h) before building an invoice.
- Cooking and recipes: adjust cooking times and bring them into clock format.
