How to name a family group
A family group name has three judges: the young nephew joining, the grandmother opening it from a phone with large text, and the cousin-in-law who married in two months ago. Your name should be warm, clear and inclusive for all three.
- Surname or family anchor. Identifies the group instantly.
- No jokes that hurt. What's funny among cousins can sting an uncle.
- Inclusive. If someone joins by marriage, they shouldn't feel excluded.
- Stable. Changing it every week exhausts older members.
- Notification-friendly. Appears every time someone writes.
Classic styles
- Classic: "Smith Family", "Garcia Family". Always works.
- The + surname: "The Smiths", "The Southerners". Warm.
- House + surname: "House Smith", "House Mendez". Home feel.
- Family + origin: "Southern Family", "Cordoba Family". Useful with multiple surnames.
- Event: "Mom's Reunion", "Annual Birthday". Theme-based groups.
Practical tips
If your family is large with subgroups (cousins, siblings, parents-with-kids), differentiate with a qualifier: "The Smiths (everyone)" for the general one and "The Smith Siblings" for the inner one. If there's family tension, avoid names that implicitly exclude any member.
For shared albums and events
- Shared Google Photos: surname + year.
- iCloud Family: main surname.
- Recurring reunions: event name ("Annual Smith BBQ").
- Family tree: formal name with branch.
