Where does Lorem Ipsum come from?
Although it looks like meaningless Latin, it's actually scrambled Latin from a real book: De finibus bonorum et malorum by Cicero, written around 45 BC. A 15th-century printer rearranged the words to create text that looks "natural" but doesn't distract the reader with coherent content. The classic phrase "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is in fact a scrambled fragment of the original.
Why still use it in 2026?
When a designer presents a mockup with real text ("Hi Mary, thanks for your purchase"), stakeholders stop looking at the design and start debating the copy. Lorem Ipsum depersonalizes content: the client sees form, hierarchy, visual rhythm — without getting hung up on whether that comma should be a period. That's why it lives on in Figma, Sketch and Webflow, and why a fast generator still makes sense.
When NOT to use Lorem Ipsum
- Pages going live. Google detects pseudo-random text and lowers perceived site quality. Replace all placeholder before go-live.
- Demos for non-technical clients. Some get spooked by "weird text" — a real-language pangram works better.
- Length testing. If your real content will have very long words (technical German, proper nouns) or short ones (Chinese), Lorem lies about the final feel. Generate with text in the actual language instead.
